Hello and happy Friday. This will be my last post of the year and I wanted to leave you with something positive, so I put together a little demo of a song I’ve been working on recently.
For this one I was influenced by songs and poems in which the author gives advice and best wishes to their son or daughter. Whether it be Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young: “May you build a ladder to the stars / And climb on every rung…” or Shakespeare’s Polonios speaking to his son Laertes: “To thine ownself be true, / And it must follow, as the night the day, / Thou canst not then be false to any man.” Or how about John Steinbeck in a letter to his son: “The object of love is the best and most beautiful. Try to live up to it.” And then there’s this little kernel of wisdom from the Drive By Truckers: “Don’t call what you’re wearing an outfit.”
Specifically I was inspired by something Harper Lee wrote: “Love, then is a paradox: to have it, we must give it.” It reminds me of the last line on the last song on the last recorded Beatles album: “"And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make". In my song love is like that, it’s a responsibility. You got it. Now give it.
That’s all I got. Thank you for reading and listening this year of 2025.
And since I’m quoting everyone under the sun, let me end with this one: “Have fun storming the castle!”
Peace out friends! -Mick
